walks
You can never really know a city, feel its vibes and connect with its history, people and culture unless you walk it. Here are some of our favorite and most delightful walks around Athens, 100% recommended for the Modernist Athens guests.
See you around!
At 300 meters (908 feet) above sea level, Mount Lycabettus summit is the highest point in Athens, while its base is covered with and pine trees.
The hill is a top attraction and can be ascended by the Lycabettus Funicular, a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki ( Find the railway station at Aristippou street). At its two peaks you can find the 19th century Chapel of St. George, as well as a theatre and a restaurant.
The National Garden is a public park of 15.5 hectares (38 acres) in the center of Athens. It is located between the districts of Kolonaki and Pangrati, directly behind the Greek Parliament building (The Old Palace). The Garden also encloses some ancient ruins and Corinthian columns, mosaics, and other features.
Athens is short on green spaces, so this vast seaside park is a blessing. Covering a man-made slope that incorporates the roof of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, this 21-hectare park has been sustainably designed with paths cutting through plantings of lavender, olive trees and other Mediterranean flora.
There’s also kids’ play areas, an outdoor gym, rental bikes and much more. A variety of free activities are laid on, but you can simply sit in a chair and soak up the sun.
Filopappou Hill is a green area to the southwest of the Acropolis. It is a favorite promenade of the Athenians and there you can have great views of the Acropolis, the whole city of Athens and the Aegean Sea that surrounds Attica.
You’ll find seasonal fruit and vegetables, fish, herbs, olives and honey all along Kallidromiou street.
